Best All Time Golfer

The bigger the stakes, the better “The Golden Bear” also known as Jack Nicklaus, played golf. This ability to come through in the clutch, at big moments, made Nicklaus the best all time golfer. The proof is he won more of the "Major" golf tournaments (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA), with 18, than any other golfer in history. (Note: Tiger Woods is hot on his heels…). Over the years, generations of golfers have learned from Jack's example and his writings. His lengthy career is legendary and he still hasn’t stopped designing courses and promoting the game of golf.

Nicklaus starting golfing professionally in 1962. His first big win was over Arnold Palmer in the U.S. Open that same year. Nicklaus’ rivalry with Palmer was something that drew viewers that were new to the game. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1962. His career had ups and downs, some related to his physical conditioning, but he went on to win all four major tournaments three times. He deduced what was wrong in his game, and fixed it.

In 1986, at age 46, he won his sixth Masters Tournament. He is the oldest player to have won that tournament. He played his last professional golf tournament at the Bayer Advantage Classic in 2005. His style of play is conservative and other players admired the way Nicklaus managed the course to aid his play. He wasn’t a great putter, but could make the big shots when needed.

The highlight of an amateur golfer’s career might be a hole in one. Jack Nicklaus made 19! He was the tour’s top money winner eight times and was PGA Player of the Year five times. Golf Magazine has named him the Player of the Century. These are just a few of the honors and awards and wins that have made Nicklaus’s career a thing of legend. Golfer Tiger Woods is approaching Nicklaus’s record number of wins.

Nicklaus has a strong work ethic so it won’t surprise you that he has taken his love of golf and created a course design firm that is responsible for nearly 1% of the U.S. golf courses. That’s over 341 courses. These gems of design are located not just in the U.S. but around the world. Many of the courses have hosted important tournaments and are award winners.

His skill as a course designer is every bit as stellar as his golfing. Nicklaus’s book on golfing is considered one of the best. This just shows that when your work is your passion your success can be unlimited. Just ask Jack Nicklaus, the top golfer in the history of golf.
