Best All-Time Baseball Franchise

The New York Yankees are the all-time best baseball franchise. They are the top professional baseball franchise; Major League Baseball franchise -- maybe the best sports franchise in history.

I'm well qualified to make this assessment because I will outright say that I hate the Yankees. I plain hate them; can’t stand to watch them play, let alone watch them win. I don’t like their fans; I don’t like any of their players; and I certainly don’t like Steinbrenner.

Nowadays all they do is pretty much give out $100 million contracts for players with breakout seasons, and then are returned with a substandard performances. Before the Yankees began their marketing technique of buying a World Series (which in the last 8 years hasn’t worked after $1 billion spent) they actually had a strategy of producing good players. That worked much better.

Despite, my view of the Yankees, I can’t lie to the people. I have to put my personal feelings aside and admit that the Yankees are the best baseball franchise in history.

The New York Yankees arrived in New York in 1903 as the New York Highlanders, and ten years later, became the New York Yankees as we know it. In 1920 they acquired, from the Boston Red Sox, possibly the best player to ever step on a baseball field, Babe Ruth, and the success of the Yankees started from there. The next three seasons they won the American League pennant, and won their first World Series in 1923.

Their domination of the Major Leagues began from then on, as they won five World Series, including four in a row, just in the 1930’s. That decade they were a perfect 5-0 in World Series appearances. In the 40’s they won four World Series titles, and five pennants. In the 50’s they won six World Series, with eight pennants.

In a span of 43 seasons, Yankee teams won 29 pennants and 20 World Series championships, with 10 championships between 1947 and 1962. For any team to win more than one championship in a decade is great, but to win six, is just unfathomable. Only three other teams have ever won more than six World Series in franchise history, let alone in only a span of ten years.

At different points, the Yankees won five consecutive World Series, and at another, won four consecutive. In total, the Yankees have won 26 World Series and 39 pennants, both the most in history. The 26 titles is more than twice as much as the second place team, the Giants. Overall, the Yankees have won 25% of the World Series and 37.5% of the American League pennants, and with this dominance it’s kind of obvious that the honor of the best pro baseball franchise belongs in New York City.

The Yankees franchise is the winner of 26 championships for a reason, the players. The Yankees have been the home to 38 different Hall of Famers, including 22 being inducted as Yankees. This list includes Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Gaylord Perry, Reggie Jackson, Dazzy Vance, Bill Dickey, Catfish Hunter, Lefty Gomez, Phil Rizzuto and Enos Slaughter. This list of players is just amazing to read by itself.

In the 1938 season alone, they had Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Bill Dickey, Joe ‘Flash’ Gordon, and Red Ruffing, all Hall of Famers. In 1951, had Whitey Ford not joined the Army, the Yankees would have had Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Johnny Mize, Yogi Berra, and Phil Rizzuto, again all hall of famers.

The amazing rosters of the Yankees franchise didn’t just apply 60 years ago, but also in the past decade. They have had Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Alfonso Soriano, Mike Mussina, Andy Pettite and Gary Sheffield, all future hall of famers.

The stacked and expensive rosters of the Yankees may have bought them titles, but nonetheless, they have won them. To a statistics book, it doesn’t really matter whether you pay $500 for a player or $25 million, the only thing that matters is the results. The Yankees have gotten results with countless rings, plaques, trophies, flags, banners and memories, which have given the Yankees the connotation of not only hated, but also winners.

A win is a win, and no matter how much I hate to say it, the truth is -- love em or hate em -- the New York Yankees are the best baseball franchise ever. In fact, they may well be simply the top sports franchise ever.

Let me think about that for a bit....
